Topic Efficacy of New Generation Cephalosporin -For the Treatment of Gonorrhoea

Background: Gonorrhoea remains a major sexually transmitted infection worldwide, and increasing antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae has substantially reduced available therapeutic options. Extended-spectrum cephalosporins, particularly ceftriaxone, remain the cornerstone of treatment. This study evaluated the clinical and microbiological efficacy and safety of ceftriaxone in patients with uncomplicated gonorrhoea.
Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study from May to July 2026 at Maharishi Markandeshwar College of Medical Science & Research (MMCMSR), Sadopur, Haryana. We enrolled and treated 50 adults with microbiologically confirmed uncomplicated gonorrhoea with a single intramuscular dose of ceftriaxone 1 g.
Results: Of the 50 participants, 48 completed microbiological follow-up. The mean age was 29.6 ± 7.3 years, and 82.0% were male. Urogenital infection was the predominant anatomical presentation. Complete clinical resolution occurred in 42 of 45 symptomatic patients (93.3%).
Conclusion: Single-dose ceftriaxone demonstrated high clinical and microbiological efficacy with favourable tolerability. Continued surveillance of ceftriaxone susceptibility, particularly in pharyngeal gonorrhoea, remains essential.
