A Critical Subjective Review of Homoeopathic Mother Tinctures and Their Therapeutic Applications

Mother tinctures are the primary pharmaceutical preparations in homoeopathy and constitute the foundation for the manufacture of potentized medicines. Their therapeutic efficacy, safety, and reproducibility depend on the quality of the source material and the standardization of the manufacturing process. Indigenous medicinal plants, owing to their rich phytochemical diversity and long-standing use in traditional medicine, represent an important source for the preparation of homeopathic mother tinctures. However, factors such as geographical variation, seasonal changes, cultivational practices, harvesting time, post-harvest handling, and extraction procedures may significantly influence the phytochemical composition and quality of the final product.
Therefore, standardization is essential to ensure batch-to-batch consistency, authenticity, purity, safety, and therapeutic reliability.
This review critically examines the current principles and practices involved in the preparation and standardization of mother tinctures from indigenous medicinal plants. It discusses the selection and authentication of plant materials, collection methods, extraction techniques, physicochemical analysis, phytochemical screening, chromatographic fingerprinting, microbial quality testing, heavy metal analysis, and stability studies. Recent advances such as DNA barcoding, high-resolution chromatographic techniques, artificial intelligence-assisted quality control, and green extraction technologies are also highlighted.
